Work
I explore the humor in poorly translated signs from China, capturing their essence in my writing.
Introduction
In 2011 began traveling to China for work trips, visiting factories in Shenzhen, Shanghai, & Zhengzhou. 2 years later I moved to Shanghai as an expat and lived & worked there from 2013-2016. I noticed that every big Chinese city I visited would seek to appeal to foreigners by including English translations on signs, menus, and especially t-shirts. They do a pretty decent job at this, making it easy for non-Chinese travelers to get around. The translations do sometimes come out unintentionally funny, so for those unable to travel to all these cities in China, I decided to start photographing them, and adding captions to further enhance the weirdness. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
